the seeing cycle

Examining the role of artificial intelligence in the design practice in this plan had us work hand in hand with AI . We discuss how we keep technology human centered as well as ethical in this speculative proposal.

the Problem

Today we are over encumbered by media and technology. This is the case for urban centers like Savannah Georgia. Luckily many cities have green spaces for people to relax and unwind from city life and connect back to nature. The graph beside shows a different story.

According to researchers at the university of Copenhagen, Denmark people are 16% more likely to use there phones when they are in greenspaces that reside in urban environments.

The goals

  • Create an AI integrated experience in a Savannah Square for people to connect with nature

  • govern the AI with ethical guidelines as well as having a glass box system

Ethical pillers

Fairness - identifying and mitigating bias to ensure that technology does not create or reinforce prejudice. It requires that the benefits and risks of a system are distributed equitably across all demographic groups.

Explainability - provide a transparent, human-understandable rationale for the decisions or outputs of an automated system. This is a system where a human can trace the path the AI took to reach a conclusion.

Accountability - The clear assignment of responsibility for the actions and outcomes of a system. It ensures that a human, not the software, is ultimately answerable for the system’s impact and has the authority to intervene or override it.

Security & Safety - The resilience of a system against unintended harm and intentional attacks. This includes protecting the integrity of the logic and the privacy of the data it processes.

Human-Centricity - A design philosophy that prioritizes human well-being, agency, and values above technical efficiency. It ensures that technology serves to enhance the human experience rather than automate it away or diminish human presence.

1

Day 1

A gold frame positioned in the square to notice something that might go unnoticed by people.

Day 2

A painting commissioned by a local artist

Day 3

A printed photograph

Day 4

A video of a bush or other plant in the square

Day 5

Ai art that generates abstractions based on the weather, temperature and plant internal electrical activity.

Day 6-7

All days displayed together

A 7-day temporary public art installation in Oglethorpe Square that traces that history  from a simple gold frame to an AI-generated art piece and asks one question:

Do we lose something each time we find a new way to see?
